本研究室では、建築遺産の価値を深く掘り下げ、守り、未来へ活かすことを目指して、研究と社会実践の両面から取り組んでいます。
現在、特に力を入れているテーマや関心分野は以下の通りです。

日本やアジアを中心とした海外の歴史的な建物や歴史的まち並みを「未来にどう活かしていくか」というテーマに取り組んでいます。

具体的には、以下のような問いを扱っています：

• 歴史都市や伝統的集落における修理や修景
  　建造物の修理や改修のデザインや工法、制度上の課題を分析します。

• 文化政策による歴史資源の再評価とクラスター化
  　「歴史文化基本構想」や「日本遺産」などに注目し、政策と地域の関係を考えます。

• 建築遺産における“本物らしさ”と観光活用の両立
  　「真実性（authenticity）」と「活用」との間にあるジレンマを探ります。

• 地域住民の遺産保護への参画
  　持続的な保護のための地域参加の仕組みを実証的に検討しています。

カンボジアを中心に、タイやラオスなどに広がる古代アンコール王朝の建築と都市の痕跡より、当時の信仰・社会・政治・文化の様相を明らかにしようとするものです。建築学と考古学、都市史、地域文化研究と連携し、現地でのフィールドワークや国際的な共同研究を通して、多角的な研究を進めています。また、こうした歴史的建築や古代都市の保存にも取り組んでいます。

• 歴史的建築から社会と文化の解明へ
  　最近では都市遺産を対象として環境考古学と連携して社会背景の解明に取り組んでいます。

• 遺産の共同調査と保存・管理計画の支援
  　国際協力の枠組みにて発掘調査・測量や保全提案を実施しています。

• 若手研究者・技術者との共同研究・トレーニング
  　フィールドワーク、デジタル記録、保存計画の策定を通した人材育成に取り組んでいます。

私たちの研究室では、建築遺産や歴史的な空間を次世代へ伝えるために、最新のデジタル技術を活用した記録・保存・活用の方法を探っています。文化遺産をただ「残す」のではなく、より深く理解し、誰もが触れられるかたちで活かすためのツールとして、デジタル技術は大きな可能性を持っています。

• 3Dスキャン（レーザースキャナー・フォトグラメトリー）による遺産の高精度記録
  　ドローンや移動式デバイス、多様なソフトウェアを利用した大規模遺産の記録等

• 3Dモデルや点群データの文化財管理・修復計画への応用
  　修復前後の比較、モニタリング、研究データの蓄積などのためのデジタルツインの構築

• VRやARによる歴史空間の再現と体験設計
  　現地に行かなくても体感できる「遺産の臨場感」を追求

• Webや展示でのインタラクティブな遺産紹介
  　教育・観光・研究に向けたインタラクティブなコンテンツ化

歴史的建築には、地域の記憶、人びとの暮らし、技術や美意識といった多様な価値が刻まれています。こうした歴史的建築を地域資源として活かす観光やまちづくりのあり方について、研究と実践の両面から取り組んでいます。

世界遺産学は、まだ新しく、発展途上にある学問分野です。日本国内で培われてきた文化財の保護技術や制度と、ユネスコの「世界遺産条約」に基づいて形成された国際的な遺産保護の考え方とが出会う場でもあります。そのため、時に価値観の違いや制度のズレが生じることもありますが、私たちの研究室では、社会と文化遺産の双方にとってより良い未来を築くために、持続可能な保存と活用のあり方を探求しています。

Laboratory Overview

At our laboratory, we are dedicated to exploring, preserving, and revitalizing the value of architectural heritage — striving to connect the past with the future through both academic research and practical engagement.
Our current research focuses on the following key themes and areas of interest:

A) Conservation of Historic Townscapes and Community Development

We explore how historic buildings and townscapes in Japan and across Asia can be sustained and revitalized for future generations.

Our research addresses questions such as:

• Repair and restoration in historic cities and villages:
  Analyzing design methods, construction techniques, and institutional challenges in architectural conservation.

• Revaluation and clustering of heritage through cultural policies:
  Examining the relationship between national heritage initiatives (e.g., Basic Plan for Historical and Cultural Town Development, Japan Heritage) and local communities.

• Balancing authenticity and tourism use:
  Investigating how to harmonize “authenticity” with creative heritage utilization.

• Community participation in heritage protection:
  Studying participatory frameworks for sustainable conservation.

B) Research and Conservation of Historic Architecture and Cities in Southeast Asia

Focusing on Cambodia and neighboring countries such as Thailand and Laos, our research examines the architecture and urban form of the ancient Angkor civilization to reveal its social, religious, political, and cultural contexts.
Collaborating across architecture, archaeology, urban history, and regional cultural studies, we conduct fieldwork and international joint research to advance multi-disciplinary approaches and support the conservation of ancient monuments and cities.

Current themes include:

• Understanding social contexts of urban heritage through collaboration with environmental archaeology.

• Joint field investigations and conservation planning under international cooperation frameworks.

• Training young researchers and professionals through fieldwork, digital documentation, and heritage planning.

C) Application of Digital Technologies for Heritage Conservation and Presentation

To convey architectural heritage and historic spaces to future generations, we explore advanced digital techniques for recording, preservation, and engagement. Digital tools not only document heritage but also expand access and understanding for diverse audiences.

Main approaches:

• High-precision 3D documentation using LiDAR, photogrammetry, drones, and mobile devices.

• Digital twins and point-cloud models for conservation, monitoring, and research archiving.

• Virtual and augmented reality experiences that recreate and communicate historical spaces.

• Interactive web and exhibition content for education, tourism, and research dissemination.

D) Heritage-Based Tourism and Urban Regeneration

Historic architecture embodies collective memory, craftsmanship, and cultural identity. Our lab studies and practices how such assets can serve as catalysts for tourism and community revitalization.

Research directions include:

• Surveys of current practices and challenges in adaptive reuse of historic buildings.

• Creative reuse of heritage as inclusive and community-oriented public spaces.

• Urban revitalization through façade restoration, adaptive reuse, and machiya rehabilitation.

• Designing heritage interpretation and storytelling for tourism and education.

E) Architectural Heritage within World Heritage Studies

World Heritage Studies is a developing interdisciplinary field that bridges Japan’s cultural property conservation practices and UNESCO’s international heritage framework.
Our research seeks sustainable ways to integrate conservation and community life while addressing gaps between national systems and global standards.

Key questions include:

• How should restoration and reconstruction be carried out while maintaining authenticity?

• What criteria define the value of architectural heritage, and how can it be effectively communicated?

• How can “Outstanding Universal Value (OUV)” be demonstrated for architectural heritage?

• How can we protect heritage in times of crisis, including disasters and conflicts?

• How can we manage complex cultural heritage that interconnects architecture, festivals, and everyday life?

Our mission is to advance the study and conservation of architectural heritage through interdisciplinary research, field engagement, and collaboration — ensuring that cultural heritage continues to inspire and sustain societies across generations.
