本研究室では、建築や都市、考古遺産が持つ魅力的な物語を解き明かし、それを次の世代へと継承していく方法を探求しています。

 研究の対象となる建築遺産は実に多様です。今も生活の営みがある伝統的な民家や集落，過去の文化や文明の証左となる歴史的建築や都市，鑑賞や学習の場である美術館や野外博物館、そして社会を支える産業遺産、さらには地下に眠る埋蔵遺構などにも及びます。私たちに気付きとインスピレーションを与えてくれる魅力ある建築遺産に向き合っていきます。

 建築遺産の保存と活用は歴史や文化を学び、体験し、地域を元気にするまちづくりの手段です。建築遺産と“対話”し，そこに潜む価値を“発見”し，創造的な方法で学び、楽しめるように“表現”していくこと。これが目指すべき建築遺産の保存と活用です。

 建築遺産の活用の方法は多様化しつつあります。建築本来の用途での利用に加えて、観光の目的地として、イベントや祭りのサイトとして、コミュニティ活動の拠点として、商業施設やレストランとして利用されることもあるでしょう。そのためには、建築本来の魅力を活かしたリノベーションや復元、VRなどのデジタル技術の利用も有効かもしれません。様々な創造的な活用の方法を一緒に考えていきましょう。

 建築遺産を活用する前提として，遺産の本質的価値を見極め，オリジナリティーを保存していくことが必要です。建築遺産においては，材料・構造・工法・空間・意匠等を適切に保存することが求められ，そのための技術や理念は日々進化しています。建築遺産の保存に必要とされる、測量や材料分析、伝統的な構造や工法と現代技術の組み合わせ、３Dスキャンやデジタル復元技術、保存管理やモニタリング技術等を学んでいきましょう。

Aims of the Shimoda laboratory of Architectural History

Aims of this laboratory is to decipher the essential values of the historical and traditional architecture and city, and consider the methods for preserving, reconstructing, rehabilitating, and utilizing these values.

Architectural heritage has distinctive designs, structures, and spaces under various historical backgrounds and settings. We try to analyze and clarify these features by various approaches including traditional manual way and/or advanced technologies. In addition, the condition of the historic buildings is various state of conservation; well preserved condition, state of the necessity under the urgent restoration works due to material deteriorations or structural damages, recommended state of reconstruction, state of buried structure or foundation in the accumulated soil, and so on. We will consider the adaptive and appropriate methods for preserve and transfer the significant values of these architectures to the present and future society. Our goal is to find the way and state of architectural heritage to impress people.
