Training and Capacity Building

For the purpose of raising experts for research and conservation of the monument, following training programs were implemented up to today: 


A: Long term training program

This program was implemented from October 2003 to May 2007. The program progressed under the style of on-site job training, and its aim was to teach the skills of restoration and conservation techniques, and also method for architectural and archaeological survey.

The program was support by Foundation for Cultural Heritage and Art Research, and implemented under the organization which receive guidance from experts of Department of Culture and Arts in Kompong Thom, Waseda University and JAPAN-APSARA Safeguarding Angkor. 

Another long term training program of the restoration technical staff had been continued from 2001 to 2017. The number of participants was maximum around 20 members, and minimum 6 members. They joined the conservation and restoration programs and studied the skills for these works. They had study trip to visit the major ancient Khmer monuments every year. When they visited to Angkor monuments, they got the lectures on the restoration methods and philosophy in class and site.


B: Short Term Training Programs

Many short term training programs about 2 weeks each were implemented for Cambodian and Japanese university students who were majoring in architecture or archaeology since 2004. Five to fifteen Cambodian University students were selected from the Royal Faculty of Art, Norton University, Cambodian Mekong University, and other educational institute.

This program was supported by The SUMITOMO Foundation and Foundation for Cultural Heritage and Art Research by 2014, then the NIPPON Foundation supported from 2015 to 2017.

Currently, training program supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japanese government is supporting the short-term program.


C: Short Term Training Programs for University Students

Another type of short-term programs was also implemented many times for the students from universities in Phnom Penh (Norton University and Cambodian Mekong University), one or two time in a year. Participant were 60~200 students at one time; usually a one-day program. In others, cooperated with a travel agency, we had implemented a short-term training program which targets foreign student who are interested in survey of monuments and conservation.


D: Guide Training program

In 2007 and 2010, Sambor Prei Kuk Conservation Project held training programs with the support from GIZ (the then GTZ) and NGO Khiri Reach. Contents of the training was to transmit the history and key point of the monument and knowledge about conservation activity, and to coach the skill of tourists guiding. The target was selected young villagers from surrounding villages of Sambor Prei Kuk.

From 2008, as a project of UNESCO, we implemented training program for local inhabitants and high school student by Cambodian experts from various field. In January 2011, December 2012, February 2013, as a cooperative program with ADB Support, training program which coach the skills of Home stay, weaving, and handy crafts to the villagers in Sambor Village was held. From October 2013, also as a cooperative program with ADB support, training program for local guide and taxi driver was held a few times.


E: Capacity Building Program (2021-2023)

University of Tsukuba and cooperative experts in Japan and Cambodia were carrying out the capacity building program of the experts and students for safeguarding Sambor Prei Kuk since April 2020 with the financial support from Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japanese Government. 

This program contained three programs; (A) Program for University Students, (B) Program for Field Conservators, and (C) Program for Experts.

筑波大学は2020年4月より文化庁から文化遺産保護国際貢献事業(文化遺産国際協力拠点交流事業)の委託を受け、サンボー・プレイ・クック遺跡群の保全にかかる人材育成プログラムを実施しました

このプログラムでは、a) 遺産保護の専門家を育成する大学生研修プログラム、b) 煉瓦造遺構の修理工事を担う技能員研修プログラム、c) 遺産管理の実務職員のための研修プログラムを行いました。

"Online Exchanging Program for Research and Preservation of the Archaeological Typed Urban Heritage"

Various field of experts who are the member of National Authority for Sambor Prei Kuk and Department of Cultural and Fine Arts in Kompong Thom province were participated this online program.

Seven Japanese experts provided lectures on the archaeological method, museum plan and management, and conservation technique of brick structures. Then, Japanese and Cambodian experts exchanged their idea and experiences on each topics.
